Your first weekend in Thanet: a calm two-day plan

A first weekend in Thanet does not need a race through every attraction. Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate are close, but each town has enough for several hours. This plan gives Margate the first day, then links Broadstairs and Ramsgate on the second.

Saturday morning in Margate

Start around Main Sands and the Old Town. The station is opposite the beach, which makes the seafront a natural first stop even when the weather only allows a short walk. Continue towards the harbour and Turner Contemporary.

The gallery is free and usually opens late enough to avoid an early rush. Its exhibitions change, so check the current programme. The building is step free and has accessible facilities.

Saturday afternoon, with one choice

Pick either more time around the Old Town and seafront or a visit to the Shell Grotto. The Grotto recommends about 30 minutes inside, but the walk and possible wait make it a larger part of the afternoon.

The underground passages have stairs, uneven flooring and no step-free access. Anyone uncomfortable in confined spaces should choose a different stop. If the weather is good, a walk towards Walpole Bay is an easy alternative.

Sunday morning in Broadstairs

Begin at Viking Bay and the harbour, then walk through Harbour Street and the High Street. Broadstairs is compact enough to browse without a route app. The beach, independent shops and cafes are close together, although the station sits uphill from the sea.

A short section towards Stone Bay gives a taste of the coast path without committing to the full walk. Check the tide before choosing a beach-level route.

Sunday afternoon in Ramsgate

Travel to Ramsgate for the Royal Harbour and the Georgian and Regency streets around it. The harbour is the centre of the visit, with food and drink options around Harbour Parade and the arches.

Choose one additional stop according to the weather and your interests. Ramsgate Tunnels can fill a wet afternoon when tours are running, while a coastal walk works in dry conditions. Advance booking and access information should be checked directly.

Finish with the Ramsgate food and drink directory, then use the town's rail station for the journey home if travelling by train.

Useful swaps

Put Turner Contemporary on the wettest part of Saturday. Move the Broadstairs coast walk to the clearest weather window. If travelling with young children or someone with limited mobility, spend longer in one town and remove a transfer.

The weekend is deliberately light on reservations. One booked meal or timed attraction is enough structure. The spare time is what allows for a beach, a shop or a harbour view that turns out to be worth staying for.
