Walking from Margate to Broadstairs: a practical coastal route

The coastal walk from Margate to Broadstairs is a proper outing, not a short promenade stroll. The route passes open seafront, chalk cliffs and several bays. Some sections stay high on the cliff while others drop towards the beach, so the experience changes with the tide and the route chosen.

Start from central Margate

Margate station, Main Sands and the Old Town give several sensible starting points. From the main seafront, head east past Turner Contemporary and continue towards Cliftonville. The early stretch has more town around it, with places to buy water or stop before the route becomes quieter.

Walpole Bay and Palm Bay offer natural pause points. Do not rely on every seasonal kiosk or toilet being open outside summer.

Stay aware of the two route levels

Thanet's coast can often be followed at beach or promenade level when the tide permits, with a clifftop path available for other sections. The lower option is not a permanent shortcut. Rising water can cut off movement between bays, and access may involve steps or uneven surfaces.

Use the clifftop route when tide times are uncertain. Do not walk close to the cliff base after rough weather, and keep back from cliff edges above. The chalk landscape changes through erosion.

Botany Bay, Kingsgate and Joss Bay

Botany Bay is known for its chalk stacks. The beach is a tempting place to extend the walk, but it should remain an optional detour governed by the tide. Kingsgate adds more chalk scenery and a natural arch, followed by the stretch towards Joss Bay.

There are repeated changes of level across this part of the coast. Anyone who needs a step-free route should not assume the full walk will work simply because individual promenades are accessible.

Finish through Stone Bay and Viking Bay

The official coastal path passes Stone Bay before reaching central Broadstairs. Viking Bay, the harbour and the town's food options make a practical finish. Broadstairs station is inland and uphill from the seafront, so keep some energy for the last part of the journey.

Plan the return before leaving

Trains and buses connect Broadstairs and Margate, which makes a one-way walk possible. Check live times on the day rather than putting a fixed timetable into the plan. Rail disruption or a seasonal bus change can alter the easiest return.

Carry water, a charged phone and clothing for a change in weather. Shoes need grip for steps and damp paths. Allow most of a day if you want time in the bays, and shorten the route when daylight, weather or energy makes that the better decision.
