Free and low-cost things to do in Thanet

A free day out can still cost money once parking, transport, food and equipment are added. These ideas keep the activity itself free or inexpensive, then point out the extras that are easy to miss.

Use the beaches as the main event

Thanet's bays are free to enter and different enough to suit different plans. Margate Main Sands is close to the station and town centre. Viking Bay sits below central Broadstairs, while quieter bays usually involve a longer walk or more thought about transport.

Bring food, water, sun protection and something warm rather than relying on beach purchases. Check tide and water quality information before swimming. Rock pooling needs a low tide and footwear that can cope with wet chalk and uneven surfaces.

Visit Turner Contemporary

Entry to Turner Contemporary's exhibitions is free. The changing programme means a return visit can feel different without another admission charge. The gallery is step free and has accessible toilets, baby changing facilities and a shop.

The likely extras are travel, parking, food and anything bought in the shop. Family tours and workshops run on selected dates, so check the programme rather than assuming they are available every day.

Walk one section of the coast

The Thanet Coastal Path links the area's towns, bays and chalk cliffs. A short section can be as worthwhile as attempting the whole route. The promenade between central Margate and Walpole Bay is an easy starting point. Around Broadstairs, the path passes Viking Bay and Stone Bay before climbing back to the clifftop.

Beach-level alternatives depend on the tide and may involve steps. Use the clifftop route when conditions are uncertain. A one-way walk also needs a bus or train fare for the return.

Look for a free museum or outdoor historic stop

Visit Thanet's current free list includes Turner Contemporary, the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum, the Hugin Viking ship at Cliffsend and the Crab Museum in Margate. Opening patterns differ. A museum may be free while inviting donations, and volunteer-run venues may not open every day.

The Hugin is outdoors and can be combined with the Pegwell Bay coast. The nature reserve is sensitive, so stay on the marked access and give feeding birds space.

The Thanet Coast Project runs walks, beach events and family activities. Some are free and others ask for a small donation. Booking may still be required because group sizes are limited and coastal activities depend on tides.

A low-cost day that stays realistic

Choose one town or one stretch of coast instead of paying to move repeatedly. Pack lunch, then allow one paid treat if the budget permits. The Thanet events page can add a free market, walk or community activity, but check the organiser's page before setting out.
